In November 2009, the Right Honourable Jean Chretien attended the unveiling of three of my portraits commissions. Immediately following this event, he was interested in visiting my studio.
I met with Monsieur Chretien on two separate occasions. The first sitting was in Toronto and the second was in his office in Ottawa, where I spent the better part of a day with him. While we spoke, I photographed him in various poses and expressions. It was an unforgettable day.
I was very inspired by this truly remarkable man and began working on his portrait in earnest. My first two pieces were done in charcoal on paper, in order to capture the person behind the face.
I found my subject so interesting that I began to draw the various expressions that he has become known for, the world over. My final piece: Twelve Faces of Jean Chretien was completed in 2011 and consists of individual floating heads, each one 8” x 8”, done in graphite.
